Caucasus Mountain Range, Russia, Europe

We attempt the summit in spite of the –30 temps we experience as we begin the final push in the dark.

Mount Elbrus journal entry:
August 18, 2002

“We awoke in the darkness, put on all of our layers, and got in position for our journey to the summit.  We left in the bitter –30 cold of night, with headlamps lighting the way.  The stars glistened above, and the trail of lamps looked like fireflies in the sky.  The sunrise washed the horizon with a blaze of pinks and oranges.  The profoundly vast space moved me.  We were focused and determined to reach the top of Europe.”
